Winter is here for those in the northern hemisphere, with thoughts drifting toward cozy blankets and mulled wine. But before we settled in for a long winter’s nap here at Algolia, we hosted one final DevBit of the year! DevBits are our quarterly, 90-minute livestreams. They’re similar to our annual DevCon event but a “bit” smaller. Our theme for the Winter 2023 edition was Community, and we celebrated with a lovely collection of speakers and topics focused on you — our developer community!
If you couldn’t attend (or just want a refresher on what was presented), I’ve compiled a brief recap with links to recordings of all the sessions. There’s also a playlist on YouTube. For this quarter’s sessions, we had talks from a mix of Algolia and community developers:
We ended the event by announcing the Algolia Developer Discord server launch. It’s a place for our developer community to ask questions and show each other what they’ve built (and, as of this morning, talk a lot about coffee). My first project — building a Discord-based search bot!
Now, on to the sessions.
Package management is a huge part of development. In 2016, Algolia built npm-search to help JavaScript developers quickly find packages for their projects. But in the intervening years, the code needed help to keep up with indexing the ever-growing collection of packages. In his presentation, Martin Kolarik, a core developer at jsDelivr, explained how npm-search works, how projects like jsDelivr build on top of it, and how his team recently stepped up to modernize the underlying indexing infrastructure.
Do you ever hang out on Y Combinator’s Hacker News? Did you know Algolia (a Y Combinator alumni) hosts the search for Hacker News? I got to spend 20 minutes chatting with Algolia Senior Engineer Jeffrey Slentz about the code and tech stack behind indexing 35 million story and comment records with a 9ms response time.
Almost half of the websites in existence are powered by WordPress, and most of them need search. Community members WebDevStudios maintain a plugin to provide search functionality for WordPress sites powered by Algolia. Founder and CEO Brad Williams walked us through building several search scenarios within WordPress live. And his use of Pokemon data in one demo showed a deep knowledge of Algolia conference lore!
Vite is a build tool focused on fast and lean web development. In the day’s final talk, Vite core team member Patak explained how their open-source community uses Discord as their chat hub. We got an in-depth look into a mature, evolving developer community and some tips and tricks on how to best engage in a chat-based community.
This all led directly to the launch announcement of the official Algolia Discord server, open to the public right now! Come join us!
And that was Winter 2023. Thank you to everyone in the community who contributes code, comes to our events, engages our community, and reads these recaps! I hope the new year finds you creating amazing things on our Build plan. Please join us again in March for the next edition of Algolia DevBits!
